U3A is an international movement which has been operating in Australia since 1984. It provides learning and social opportunities for people in their ‘Third Age’, the post-retirement stage of life when they have time to widen their horizons.

City U3A focuses on the City of Sydney local government area, with the following aims:

  1. to provide intellectually stimulating programs of learning for mature age people in partial or complete retirement;
  2. to deliver those programs of learning by means of a voluntary, self-help community in which all members enjoy equal status;
  3. to foster stimulating social contacts between members; and
  4. to improve the quality of life of members and to demonstrate that intellectual capacity can be maintained well into the "third age".

New membership fee for extended period

City U3A’s Management Committee has decided to set a subscription fee of $40.00 for the current year. People joining from the beginning of 2010 will be asked to pay $40.00 for membership to 30 June next year (2011). (see Change to City U3A Rules below)

Change to City U3A Rules regarding subscription dates

A special general meeting of members of City U3A held on Tuesday 19 January 2010, unanimously approved a change of timing of annual subscriptions. The amended Rules provide that annual subscriptions are payable on a financial year (1 July to 30 June) rather than on a calendar year basis. All existing members at the time of the meeting are financial until 30 June this year (2010). Renewal notices for them will be sent out on or about 1 July.

The amended Rules provide that a new member’s first annual subscription entitles him or her to membership until the following 30 June, but if a member joins between 1 January and 30 June, that member’s first annual subscription entitles them to membership until 30 June in the following calendar year (that is, when joining in the first half of the calendar year 2010, new members will be covered until 30 June 2011). After their first period of membership, subscription payments will be due annually, payable on or about 1 July for the subsequent financial year.
